One Fighting Championship revealed the identity of some of their fighters and the extent of their plans to show that the hype which has surrounded this new promotion is well and truly justified.
I’m told the press conference was packed and that there were long queues as the organizers attempted to register every single guest. 100 seats were laid out but they weren’t enough and a lot of journalists had to wait in the wings and were complaining because they couldn’t get decent photos.
With the VIP tickets selling out within two hours of going on sale this shows just how much excitement there is in Singapore about this brand new promotion which looks set to be the biggest in Asia.
Creating hype is one thing but ONE FC will be judged on their final product and today’s press conference and press releases have given us much more insight into what that will be.
Firstly the fighters:
-6x Muay Thai World Champion, Anuwat Kaewsamrit (Thailand)
-Wushu and MCFC Champion, Eduard Folayang (Philippines)
-Sanda World Champion, Bao Li Gao (China)
-Spirit MC Champion, Kwang Hee Lee (Korea)
-6x Muay Thai World Champion, Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtorn (Thailand)
-Total Combat FC Champion, Eddie Ng (Hong Kong)
-Malaysia Champion and XFC Champion, Adam Kayoom (Malaysia)
-Sanda World Champion, Zhao Zhi Long (China)
-BJJ World Champion, Zorobabel Moreira (Brazil/Singapore)
-URCC FC Champion, Kevin Belingon (Philippines)
-WBA Boxing World Champion, Yodsanan Sityodtong (Thailand)
-Muay Thai World Champion and K1 Veteran, Ole Laursen (Philippines)
-Risingon FC Champion, Soo Chul Kim (Korea)
-2x MCFC Champion, Mitch Chilson (USA/Singapore)
-BJJ World Champion and MCFC Champion, Leandro Issa (Brazil/Singapore)
-URCC FC Champion, Eric Kelly (Philippines)
-5x Muay Thai World Champion Orono Wor Petchpun (Thailand)
-Sanda World Champion, Ba Teer (China)
-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Gregor Gracie (Brazil)
-Muay Thai World Champion, Yoddecha Sityodtong (Thailand)
-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Rolles Gracie (Brazil)
-Afghanistan Champion and MCFC Champion, Malik Arash Malawyi (Afghanistan)
-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Igor Gracie (Brazil)
Presumably they won’t all be fighting on September 3rd but it is an exciting and eclectic mix. Unless you count James Toney, which personally I don’t, there has yet to be a world class boxer to satisfactorily strap on the 5oz gloves and I can’t wait to see what sort of damage Yodsanan Sityodtong can do in the cage.
There also aren’t that many truly elite Muay Thai fighters doing MMA. Anderson Silva’s striking is good but it wouldn’t be anywhere near good enough to get him near the top of a pure stand up sport.
Fighters like Anuwat Kaewsamrit, Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtom and Orono Wor Petchpun have already shown that they are amongst the best stand up fighters of their generation. If they can develop a decent ground game, and there’s no better way of doing this than working with the BJJ world champions at Evolve MMA every day, it will be great to see them put their Muay Thai to use within the cage.
Kevin Belingon, Eduard Folayang and Eric Kelly are URCC champions and the top fighters from the Philippines and need to be testing themselves against international opposition on a regular basis. Folayang and Kelly will be doing just that in September with the former taking on Legacy Muay Thai’s Ole Laursen and the latter Evolve MMA’s Mitch Chilson.
The Laursen vs Folayang fight will be for South Asian bragging rights as these two have firmly established themselves as the top stand up fighters in the region. Both have a tendency to get in real back and forth wars and I don’t think there is any way this will be a bad fight.
Chilson vs Kelly is also intriguing, Kelly is unbeaten and has some slick submission skills but Chilson has yet to lose a fight and looks a real prospect. The Filipino will probably be the favourite due to his superior experience but Evolve MMA probably has the best coaching team outside of the Americas and rumour has it that Chilson has improved in leaps and bounds since we last saw him fight.
Yodsanan is taking on Daniel Mashamaite in what should be an entertaining scrap. Mashamaite has a Muay Thai background but can handle himself on the ground, nothing is known about Yodsanan as a mixed martial artist but, being a boxing world champion, one thing is for sure he will know how to fight.
Only three fights have been confirmed from the September card so far but Zorobabel Moreira Jnr, who had an impressive win over Ferrid Kheder last month, has been confirmed. Moreira is a BJJ world champion, as is his Evolve MMA team mate Lendro Issa, with the latter widely tipped to make a run for the UFC.
Eddie Ng has been fighting at a decent level in England and is probably Hong Kong’s number one fighter. He’s already very well known in the UK and if he can fight regularly in Asia he will soon make a name for himself here.
For me this list has just the right balance. A few well established, well rounded guys like Folayang, Laursen, Issa, Belingon. A few guys that are phenomenal in one department and have a lot of potential to develop into elite mixed martial artists like Moreira, Yodsanan and Anuwat. Plus three of the most credible Gracies in Igor, Gregor and Rolles.
The other exciting news is that One FC is going to be holding events literally all over Asia. Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, Manila, Hong Kong, Macau… The list goes on.
The budget is in place (I’m told that expensive champagne was flowing freely at the press conference, and Victor Cui, the man behind One FC, is massively experienced in event management.
As a long term resident of South East Asia I am really excited about this show and am looking forward to see what One FC has in store on September 3rd.
