Nick Diaz No Show In Super Fight Against Braulio Estima

Was looking forward to this fight the most out of all the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Superfights at the BJJ Expo. I log into Facebook, find some links to the Superfights and what’s this?! The main event of all the fights is off!
Here’s the video of what went down when Braulio is standing on the mats ready to roll and waiting for Mr. Diaz. But Mr Diaz doesn’t show up, and let’s say Braulio is less than impressed.

But hey, maybe, just maybe we’ll get to see the both of them sort it out in a cage now!

Hometown Hero Shannon Winitchai Shines at DARE Championship in Bangkok

Shannon WInatchai (black shorts) vs DK Panjabutra (red shorts)

DARE Championship’s second event was witnessed by a sold out crowd at the Insomnia Night Club in Bangkok and saw a number of local fighters shine. Mixed martial artists from as far afield as Brazil, South Africa, Sweden, Poland, Korea and Malaysia featured on the seven fight card but it was a 22 year old from Thailand who stole the show.

Shannon Wiratchai is a university graduate who speaks three different languages fluently yet has decided to dedicate himself to his fighting career. It is testament to how fast the sport is growing in Thailand that MMA should appeal to such a talented young man and not only did he win his professional debut but he was also involved in the fight of the night with fellow Thai DK Panjabutra.

Both men were fighting professionally for the first time although Wiratchai had a solid sounding 5-1 amateur record. Panjabutra is a former national Judo champion who has supposedly been in more than his fair share of street fights.

The first round belonged to Wiratchai who was able to land the more telling blows on the feet and controlled the action once the fight went to the floor with a strategy which was surprisingly methodical given how inexperienced he is.

Panjabutra looked visibly tired and Wiratchai tried to capitalize by pulling guard and going for a guillotine early in round two. It proved to be an error as he was unable to finish the fight and ended up mounted and on the receiving end of some sharp elbows.

It appeared as if Panjabutra might be on his way to a stoppage win but Wiratchai did an excellent job of controlling his posture and preventing him from doing too much damage before working his way out and springing to his feet. The round ended with the younger man in the ascendancy landing a series of unanswered strikes to his grounded opponent

Wiratchai began round three with a broad smile on his face and the charismatic young fighter clearly had the crowd on his side by this stage. He was able to control the action again and Panjabutra showed an iron chin to absorb the incessant onslaught and Wiratchai went all out to finish the fight in the dying seconds, landing a brutal head kick which stunned the 33 year old brawler and sealed an emphatic decision win.

Wiratchai looked calm and composed throughout the three round contest but admitted afterwards that he was far from relaxed before the fight,

“It was exciting, he is more than 10 years older than me and he is a Judo champion so it was a real honour to fight him. I felt nervous beforehand, I was actually sick but I spoke to my coach and my parents and they helped me a lot. I love mixed martial arts and I am proud to represent Thailand and hope Thai people will learn to love this sport as much as I do,” he said.

The main event of the evening saw Bangkok based Malaysian Adam Kayoom go up against highly rated Korean Seok Mo Kim. Although he has only had two professional MMA fights Kayoom is an incredibly experienced and well rounded mixed martial artist who has won world championships in Muay Thai and has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Kayoom showed the sort of stand up skills you would expect from a fighter who has fought in both the famous Lumpinee and Ratchadamnern stadiums in Bangkok. He landed a few sharp leg kicks but soon found himself on the receiving end of a big knee from the well rounded Seok. It appeared that Kayoom could be close to being stopped but the highly rated Malaysian was able to regain his composure and followed a sharp elbow up with a straight left hand from the southpaw stance which dropped Seok.

With such an impressive pedigree in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai it is difficult to pinpoint a weakness in Kayoom’s arsenal and having knocked his Korean opponent with down with a crisp punch he wasted no time in taking his back and sinking in an inescapable rear naked choke.

Kayoom is the owner of the Q23 Martial Arts Academy in Bangkok and the founder of the Thailand branch of the famous American Top Team and was relieved to claim a win on front of so many of his students,

“I’d like to thank everyone not just for coming tonight but for helping me to prepare for this fight. He was tough, Gregor Gracie couldn’t finish him but I was too relaxed at the start of the fight. I had an injury from training and he hurt me but I fought through the pain, Dare Championship is a great event and is really setting the standard for MMA here in Thailand,” he said.

In one of the most eagerly anticipated contests of the evening two Thai based foreign fighters put their unbeaten records on the line. Swedish fighter Wiktor Svensson was representing Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket while Krysztof Hajtalowicz from Poland travelled down from Golden Triangle MMA in Chiang Mai.

After a back and forth first round both men were visibly exhausted and the fight degenerated into a gruelling war of attrition. In the end it was Hajtalowicz who prevailed landing a solid knee and then relying on his last reserves of energy to sink in a second round rear naked choke submission. It was also a good night for Nuay Legacygym, a veteran of over 200 Muay Thai fights, who showed off some impressive ground fighting skills to finish fellow Thai Robert Lek with a first round armbar attempt.

Mixed martial arts in Thailand is growing rapidly in popularity and Dare Championship is the only promotion in the country. The third event is scheduled to take place in Bangkok in November. For more information visit: www.darefightsports.com

One Fighting Championship To Be Streamed Live on Sherdog

One Fighting Championship announced yesterday that it will be streamed live on Sherdog. This is amazing news because it means MMA fans all over the world will be able to watch the show live.

The presence of Gregor Gracie, Phil Baroni and Yoshiyuki Yoshida on the card pretty much guarantees that people are going to try and watch this, hopefully the stream will be up to scratch.

It’s also great news for the Asian and Asian based fighters because while people will be tuning in to see the big names they are also going to find out about top up and coming prospects like Eddie Ng, Leandro Issa, Eric Kelly and, of course, Eduard Folayang and Ole Laursen.

This is an amazing opportunity for Laursen and Folayang who basically have Yoshida vs Baroni as the warm up fight for their main event. It’s a clever move by One FC not putting any of the international stars in the main event because fighters all over Asia are going to look at Folayang and Laursen’s names at the top of the card and think ‘that’s where I want to be’.

Ever since the card was announced all the MMA fighters I have spoken to in Thailand have said how much they want to be fighting for this show and the Sherdog news makes it even more appealing because it means that Dana White and Jo Silva are both blatantly going to be watching live and making extensive notes.

Giving every single person the world an opportunity to watch your show for absolutely nothing is a great move because it guarantees massive exposure for sponsors and fighters. Ticket sales are reportedly good and I think One FC probably waited until they were totally sure the venue would sell out before announcing this news.

One FC have also been clever in that they have taken the best elements of the UFC, such as the cage and the 3×5 minute rounds, and combined it with the best elements of Pride, such as the soccer kicks and stomps. This will appeal to hardcore MMA fans with fond memories of Pride but by keeping the fights inside a cage and the rounds relatively short casual fans are far less likely to be put off than they might have been by the full Pride experience.

Dare are hosting their second event in September and a lot of fighters are already openly speculating as to whether this could provide a stepping board into One FC as both Daniel Mashamaite and Zorobabel Moreira Jnr who featured on the last Dare card will be in action in Singapore in September.

One FC could really provide a boost for the smaller regional shows such as Dare in Thailand, URCC in the Philippines and Legend FC in Hong Kong and give their fighters a real incentive to perform well in order to win a lucrative contract with One FC.

One thing is for sure, this is a great time to be a mixed martial artist in Asia.

One FC Aiming To Dominate Asia

Orono Vpp Evolve, Yodsanan Sityodthong, Muaylok Worldboxing, Anuwat Kaewsamrit, Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtorn

One Fighting Championship revealed the identity of some of their fighters and the extent of their plans to show that the hype which has surrounded this new promotion is well and truly justified.

I’m told the press conference was packed and that there were long queues as the organizers attempted to register every single guest. 100 seats were laid out but they weren’t enough and a lot of journalists had to wait in the wings and were complaining because they couldn’t get decent photos.

With the VIP tickets selling out within two hours of going on sale this shows just how much excitement there is in Singapore about this brand new promotion which looks set to be the biggest in Asia.

Creating hype is one thing but ONE FC will be judged on their final product and today’s press conference and press releases have given us much more insight into what that will be.

Firstly the fighters:

-6x Muay Thai World Champion, Anuwat Kaewsamrit (Thailand)
-Wushu and MCFC Champion, Eduard Folayang (Philippines)
-Sanda World Champion, Bao Li Gao (China)
-Spirit MC Champion, Kwang Hee Lee (Korea)
-6x Muay Thai World Champion, Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtorn (Thailand)
-Total Combat FC Champion, Eddie Ng (Hong Kong)
-Malaysia Champion and XFC Champion, Adam Kayoom (Malaysia)
-Sanda World Champion, Zhao Zhi Long (China)
-BJJ World Champion, Zorobabel Moreira (Brazil/Singapore)
-URCC FC Champion, Kevin Belingon (Philippines)
-WBA Boxing World Champion, Yodsanan Sityodtong (Thailand)
-Muay Thai World Champion and K1 Veteran, Ole Laursen (Philippines)
-Risingon FC Champion, Soo Chul Kim (Korea)
-2x MCFC Champion, Mitch Chilson (USA/Singapore)
-BJJ World Champion and MCFC Champion, Leandro Issa (Brazil/Singapore)
-URCC FC Champion, Eric Kelly (Philippines)
-5x Muay Thai World Champion Orono Wor Petchpun (Thailand)
-Sanda World Champion, Ba Teer (China)
-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Gregor Gracie (Brazil)
-Muay Thai World Champion, Yoddecha Sityodtong (Thailand)
-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Rolles Gracie (Brazil)
-Afghanistan Champion and MCFC Champion, Malik Arash Malawyi (Afghanistan)
-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Igor Gracie (Brazil)

Presumably they won’t all be fighting on September 3rd but it is an exciting and eclectic mix. Unless you count James Toney, which personally I don’t, there has yet to be a world class boxer to satisfactorily strap on the 5oz gloves and I can’t wait to see what sort of damage Yodsanan Sityodtong can do in the cage.

There also aren’t that many truly elite Muay Thai fighters doing MMA. Anderson Silva’s striking is good but it wouldn’t be anywhere near good enough to get him near the top of a pure stand up sport.

Fighters like Anuwat Kaewsamrit, Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtom and Orono Wor Petchpun have already shown that they are amongst the best stand up fighters of their generation. If they can develop a decent ground game, and there’s no better way of doing this than working with the BJJ world champions at Evolve MMA every day, it will be great to see them put their Muay Thai to use within the cage.

Kevin Belingon, Eduard Folayang and Eric Kelly are URCC champions and the top fighters from the Philippines and need to be testing themselves against international opposition on a regular basis. Folayang and Kelly will be doing just that in September with the former taking on Legacy Muay Thai’s Ole Laursen and the latter Evolve MMA’s Mitch Chilson.

The Laursen vs Folayang fight will be for South Asian bragging rights as these two have firmly established themselves as the top stand up fighters in the region. Both have a tendency to get in real back and forth wars and I don’t think there is any way this will be a bad fight.

Chilson vs Kelly is also intriguing, Kelly is unbeaten and has some slick submission skills but Chilson has yet to lose a fight and looks a real prospect. The Filipino will probably be the favourite due to his superior experience but Evolve MMA probably has the best coaching team outside of the Americas and rumour has it that Chilson has improved in leaps and bounds since we last saw him fight.

Yodsanan is taking on Daniel Mashamaite in what should be an entertaining scrap. Mashamaite has a Muay Thai background but can handle himself on the ground, nothing is known about Yodsanan as a mixed martial artist but, being a boxing world champion, one thing is for sure he will know how to fight.

Only three fights have been confirmed from the September card so far but Zorobabel Moreira Jnr, who had an impressive win over Ferrid Kheder last month, has been confirmed. Moreira is a BJJ world champion, as is his Evolve MMA team mate Lendro Issa, with the latter widely tipped to make a run for the UFC.

Eddie Ng has been fighting at a decent level in England and is probably Hong Kong’s number one fighter. He’s already very well known in the UK and if he can fight regularly in Asia he will soon make a name for himself here.

For me this list has just the right balance. A few well established, well rounded guys like Folayang, Laursen, Issa, Belingon. A few guys that are phenomenal in one department and have a lot of potential to develop into elite mixed martial artists like Moreira, Yodsanan and Anuwat. Plus three of the most credible Gracies in Igor, Gregor and Rolles.

The other exciting news is that One FC is going to be holding events literally all over Asia. Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, Manila, Hong Kong, Macau… The list goes on.

The budget is in place (I’m told that expensive champagne was flowing freely at the press conference, and Victor Cui, the man behind One FC, is massively experienced in event management.

As a long term resident of South East Asia I am really excited about this show and am looking forward to see what One FC has in store on September 3rd.

ONE Fighting Championships

ONE Fighting Championship looks set to be one of the most exciting things ever to happen to mixed martial arts in Thailand.

The first event is scheduled for September 3rd at the 12,00 capacity Singapore Indoor Stadium and the most expensive tickets sold out in under two hours, causing the website to crash.

Kru Chatri Sityodtong poses with members of the Evolve MMA fight team

According to various online reports the show could feature a number of Thai fighters. Former boxing world champion Yodsanan Sityodtong, who trains at Evolve MMA, could be making his MMA debut and One FC are apparently planning on using fighters from all the MMA camps in Thailand including Phuket Top Team, Tiger Muay Thai and Legacy Muay Thai.

One FC are going to focus on Asian and Asian based fighters and there are so many top fighters coming to train in Thailand at the moment they will have plenty to choose from. Phuket Top Team is currently home to Rob Hill, one of Australia’s top fighters, and Daniel Mashaimate a stand up specialist from Malaysia.

UFC veterans Roger Huerta and Mike Swick are planning on opening up their own camp in Phuket while fighters like Phil Baroni, Jake Shields and Brian Ebersole are all regular guests at Tiger Muay Thai.

Although a lot of these fighters are under contract to other organizations they will definitely be of interest to One FC who supposedly have a huge amount of money to spend courtesy of a mysterious Asian investor.

Shinya Aoki is supposed to already be in negotiations although I was under the impression that he had a contract with Dream. Either way there are going to be some great fighters and the fights should be broadcast in Thailand by ESPN Star Sports, just like Martial Combat was, although hopefully not weeks after the actual event.

Victor Cui (left) owner and CEO of ONE Fighting Championship

The ‘Dana White figure’ is a Mr Victor Cui who was also responsible for organizing Martial Combat and has also been involved with lots of other televised stuff like the X Games. A lot of people are saying that his experience and contacts will help this show succeed where others, such as Fury: Armageddon in Macau, Affliction in the US, Cage Rage in the UK have failed.

The exciting news for MMA fans in Thailand is that the show has enough money to bring in some of the best fighters in the world but is also going to give a chance for some local fighters to show what they can do.

The fact that tickets are selling so fast means that there must be a lot of interest in Singapore and a sold out stadium is the surest sign of success for any MMA show. There are already a few MMA shows in South Asia like URCC in the Philippines, Legend FC in Hong Kong and Dare Fight Sports in Thailand but they seem to cater to more of a local audience.

One FC looks set to feature some local fighters but should also be broadcast to an international audience and even if it might not be shown on TV outside of Asia fighters are likely to get noticed all over the world if they perform well.

A few promotions have tried to break into the Asian market with mixed success. Dream is well known in Japan and the US but not so much in other Asian countries such as Thailand. The last MMA event scheduled to take place in Macau got cancelled and all the fighters were left stranded with no-one to pay for their hotel tickets or flights home.

One FC sounds like it us authentic and built to last and should be good news for MMA fighters and fans.

Rafael Lopes in Tatame & Bloody Elbow

Rafael is the BJJ instructor here at Phuket Top Team.  I’ve done a few classes with him and he has a world of knowledge when it comes to BJJ. The other day we went over arm drags to take the back and sweeps both from butterfly guard. He also put me through some half guard sweeps and some very sneaky lapel chokes.

What most people don’t know is that he has developed some amazing stand up. The first week i arrived here, we did some sparring and i was surprised at how technical and relaxed he was. Over a month ago Rafael  volunteered to fight veteran legend and 10 x world champion Jomhod Kiatadisak with only 12 hours notice and without much fight training. Jomhod is past his prime but is a well respected and dangerous fighter who has hardly seen a lose in his recent fights. Rafael took Jomhod to a close decision and held his own with ease.

If this wasn’t enough Rafael fought a few days ago against Slatan. Slatan has fought the likes of Artem Levin and Chaowalit and has win’s over Robert (Terminator) of Tiger Muay Thai and Neung (formerly of Tiger Muay Thai, now a trainer at Phuket Top Team). Rafael went on to knock Slatan out cold in the second round and winning the PK-1 Championship belt.

You’ll notice Raf reaching down for that low kick everytime in the following video. At the time i wanted to shout at him and tell him to just check the kick instead of putting his stupid hand down. I later found out that Slatan’s low kicks were so strong that in the 1st round it really damaged Raf’s leg and he couldn’t block anymore because of the pain.

This week Rafael has had some great exposure through BloodyElbow dot Com and also through one of Brazil’s most highly regarded magazine Tatame dot Com , which he also said has been one of his dreams to do before he dies. His other was go fight in Pride, but that’s too late now. Check them out for a good read.

White/Blue Festival

White/Blue Festival

This just popped up on my Facebook newsfeed and I’m pretty keen to enter! Bangkok BJJ will be holding the next White/Blue Festival. A small Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition just for us low ranking white and blue belts. A great way to get some experience under your belt and meet more of the BJJ crew out here in Thailand. If i can remember correctly, the last one was held by EMAC and was just a few months ago in March.

As soon as i heard of this, I told Aurore and Bonsai about going up to the event as a team to represent Phuket Top Team. They are both really eager to compete as well. Aurore just needs to get some Gi training in as it’s a Gi only event, and Bonsai has to reschedule his 4 tattoo sessions earlier so that he can roll with his new awesomely insane back piece. He’ll flex that shit after he wins. For sure. Continue Reading…

Battle Collossal has MMA

Battle Collossal has MMA

Battle Collossal is the love child of Phon Martdee and Muay Thai Promotions. Originally a Muay Thai only event, this weekend we saw them introduce boxing and MMA to the card. I expected the boxing to bore me and the MMA to give me a raging boner. On the contrary it did the opposite.

Battle Collossal X introduced the Muay Thai fans to MMA. Their first taste was a bitter one. It’s great that they put on an MMA fight. I love MMA. What they the audience recieved was an introduction to Lay and Pray 2.0 which consists of more lay and more pray than the previous version. What we witnessed for 15mins was two heavy men laying on top of each other sending the crowd into complete comatose. I think it sucks, but it was inevitable. Next time, bring in the lighter weight classes for faster paced, more transitiony groundwork and more high amplitude takedowns.

The fight lacked any sweeps and transitions with some exhausted lay and pray with a lot of snorting in between.
Who am i to complain though. Both of these men could headbutt me into the ground.
Here’s some action packed photo’s i took at the event as one of their official photographers.
